The IRIS Experience

Book an appointment

When visiting our surgical facilities for your pre-operative evaluation, you will meet an ophthalmologist and optometrist. They will perform a complete assessment of your vision and health of your eyes to determine whether or not you are a candidate for refractive surgery.

They will provide you with clear answers to your questions in an effort to assist you in making a well-informed decision.

Please contact us to schedule the date of your pre-operative assessment:

The pre-operative evaluation for refractive surgery is provided free of charge and requires no commitment on your part.

No glasses or contact lenses prescription will be provided following your pre-operative assessment.

With your consent, your optometrist can send us a summary of your current file. For this purpose, a Reference Report will need to be sent by him/her prior to your pre-operative evaluation date at the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic.

You will be asked to sign this comanagement form to authorize your optometrist to send us by fax your personal information. An IRIS coordinator will contact you afterwards to schedule your visit at the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic.

Remember that surgery is always subject to the approval of the ophthalmologist, following a comprehensive pre-operative assessment performed at the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic.

CONTACT LENSES BEFORE PRE-OPERATIVE ASSESSMENT

To ensure the accuracy of your pre-operative measurements, you must plan to stop wearing your contact lenses completely before assessment:

  • A minimum of 14 days for soft contact lenses
  • A minimum of 4 weeks per 10 years of wear for gas permeable semi-rigid contact lenses

Day of the Pre-Operative Assessment

  • At the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic, the pre-operative assessment lasts approximately 2 hours.
  • In order to better serve you, please inform us if you are a person with mobility impairment.
  • With respect to the other patients and for your own comfort during the pre-operative assessment, please bring someone with you to take care of young children.
  • Also bring with you the complete list of medications you are currently taking.
  • Anaesthetic eye drops will be used for some procedures. These drops will produce a numbing sensation on the surface of your eye for approximately 15 minutes.
  • Dilation eye drops will be instilled in order to perform the detailed assessment of the back of the eye (retina). The pupil dilation increases sensitivity to light, creates slight blurring of distance vision and temporarily reduces the ability to focus on nearby objects with your distance correction on.
  • The dilation effect generally lasts 4 to 6 hours. It is not recommended to drive once your pupils have been dilated. Ideally, you should wear sunglasses and plan to have someone to take you home afterwards.
  • No glasses or contact lenses prescription will be provided following your pre-operative assessment.
  • If you are susceptible to dry eyes, you may be asked to use artificial tears on a regular basis several days prior to your surgery.
  • Remember that surgery is always conditional on the approval of the ophthalmologist.
