The Microkeratome

The microkeratome is an automated surgical device used to create a flap of corneal tissue for LASIK surgery.

The suction ring allows the microkeratome to be stabilized on the eye for the creation of the flap. During suction, the internal pressure of the eye is elevated to increase corneal rigidity. This reduces blood flow in the retina, resulting in a temporary loss of light perception. Vision returns after a few seconds, as soon as the suction pressure is released once the creation of the flap is completed.

Amadeus II™ Microkeratome

The Amadeus II™ Microkeratome (Zeimer Group) has been selected by the ophthalmologists at the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic, among other surgical devices, for its following features:

One-piece device:

  • The keratome and the suction ring do not require on-eye assembly which can compromise suction.
  • Ready to begin immediately once suction has been established. This enables to shorten suction time, thus limiting the time during which the blood flow is reduced.

Selection of the suction ring diameter:

  • Different diameters of suction rings can be adapted on the device.
  • Enables to create a corneal flap adapted to the corneal diameter and the pupil diameter.

Creation of a nasal hinge:

  • The hinge is the portion of the flap still attached to the cornea.
  • The nasal position of the hinge preserves the long ciliary nerves to the cornea on the same side. These nerves are responsible for the reflex arc which stimulates the production of tears.
  • Shortens the temporary diminution of the corneal sensitivity which is responsible for dry eye symptoms during the post-operative period.

Selection of the Microkeratome blade:

  • Allows the ophthalmologist to select the thickness of the flap according to the thickness of the cornea and the prescription to be corrected.
