The beautiful spring season has arrived, and with it comes yard work. Doing outdoor work can make us prone to injuries. It is, therefore, advisable to wear safety glasses or sunglasses to protect your eyes. Here are the types of hazards to be mindful of while doing your yardwork:

Pruning or mowing

When you trim your hedges or mow the lawn, debris, grass, branches, twigs, and even rocks will likely be thrown around and possibly toward your face. Lawnmowers can kick up dust, dirt and sand through the air and damage your corneas. Wearing sunglasses or goggles will prevent any injuries caused by flying debris.

Pesticides or fertilizers

Spraying pesticides or fertilizers on your lawn and garden is great for lush greens and hearty veggies but not for your eyes. Wearing a pair of safety glasses can help protect your eyes from the chemicals dispersed in the air.

UV Rays

When exposed to the sun for long periods, your eyes can be damaged. A pair of sunglasses or safety glasses with UV protection is an easy solution.

Ways to prevent eye injuries in the yard

There are several ways to protect your eyes in the yard. If you are mowing, check for sticks or debris that could injure your eyes before you start. Second, be aware of people nearby when using equipment. Wear safety glasses and face protection to prevent high-speed debris from hitting and injuring your face when using a weed wacker. And finally, be sure to follow all instructions and directions when operating lawn equipment or applying chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Being careful when operating these will protect you from accidents. Many may think nothing will happen to them, but it is better to be safe than sorry and protect your eyes from the start.
