IRIS is proud to sponsor Canada's top ten-ranked Women's tennis player, Alexsandra Wozniak. Wozniak achieved a career-best ranking of no. 21 on June 22, 2009, making her the fifth highest ranked Canadian singles player of all time.
IRIS Gives Back through Mundial
IRIS is committed on an international level to support IRIS Mundial. This organization is comprised of optometrists, opticians, and ophthalmologists who volunteer medical services to promote better vision in third world countries. Each year IRIS pledges $10 from every pair of glasses sold across the country during the month of February.
IRIS is proud to donate $64,000 to the most recent IRIS Mundial program throughout Canada. Since 2008 over $880,000 was raised to support the IRIS Mundial mission. IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic has supported this program for a second year with a donation of $50 from each surgery. An additional $5,300 was raised for the cause.
The IRIS Challenge began as a way for the late IRIS founder and president, Dr. Francis Jean, to support his brother, Remi Jean, in his battle against cancer. Remi was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2007. Remi's passion for cycling and the brothers' mutual love for the outdoors inspired them to create the IRIS Challenge to raise money for cancer research. In 2010, they rode from Vancouver to their home town of Baie-Comeau. In the following years, The IRIS Challenge was held in Banff where more riders participated. Tragically, in 2014, Dr. Jean passed away in Jasper, AB while cycling from Vancouver to Banff to participate in the IRIS Challenge.
In 2015, a viewfinder was dedicated in Dr. Jean's honour during the IRIS Challenge. This breathtaking and peaceful view is located in Jasper National Park just past the Columbia Ice Fields at the Tangle Creek pull out, a view Dr. Jean loved.
The IRIS Challenge has now evolved to include a 90km and a 50km ride, a half marathon as well as a 10km walk to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. For more information on the Challenge and how you can become a participant, visit IRISchallenge.ca!
