Can Eye Strain at Work Be Prevented?

Eye strain at work has become increasingly common, especially with the amount of time we now spend in front of digital screens. Blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches, or a burning sensation can all affect comfort, focus, and productivity throughout the day.

The good news? Yes—eye strain can often be prevented or significantly reduced with simple habits and proper workspace adjustments.

What Is Eye Strain at Work?

Eye strain, also known as asthenopia, occurs when the eyes are overworked or under constant effort for long periods.

In the workplace, it is often linked to:

  • Prolonged screen use,
  • Poor visual posture,
  • Improper lighting,
  • Reduced blinking while focusing on a screen.

As a result, eye muscles become fatigued and the eyes dry out more quickly.

Common Symptoms to Watch For

Eye strain may include:

  • Dry, red, or irritated eyes,
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision,
  • Headaches toward the end of the day,
  • Increased sensitivity to light,
  • A heavy or tired feeling around the eyes.

These symptoms are often reversible—especially when addressed early.

Simple Ways to Prevent Eye Strain

1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes, look at an object about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. This allows your eye muscles to relax and helps reduce accumulated visual tension.

2. Adjust Your Screen Position

Poor screen positioning forces the eyes to work harder than necessary.

For optimal comfort:

  • Place the screen about an arm’s length away,
  • Position the top of the screen slightly below eye level,
  • Avoid glare by keeping screens perpendicular to windows.

3. Improve Lighting Conditions

Lighting that is too bright or too dim can strain the eyes.

Ideally:

  • use soft, indirect ambient lighting,
  • avoid light sources directly in your field of vision,
  • adjust screen brightness and contrast to match the room lighting.

4. Blink More Often

When staring at a screen, we naturally blink less, which contributes to dry eyes.

Make a conscious effort to blink regularly and, if needed, use lubricating eye drops recommended by your eye care professional.

5. Wear Glasses Designed for Screen Use

Even without a major vision issue, glasses designed for computer work can make a difference.

They can help:

  • Reduce focusing effort,
  • Improve visual comfort,
  • Minimize glare and visual fatigue.

A comprehensive eye exam can determine whether a specific prescription or anti-reflective treatment would be beneficial.

What If Eye Strain Persists?

If symptoms continue despite good habits, an eye exam is strongly recommended.

Persistent eye strain may be linked to:

  • an uncorrected vision issue,
  • dry eye disease,
  • eye coordination or focusing problems.

An optometrist can identify the cause and recommend personalized solutions.

Eye strain at work is not inevitable. With healthy visual habits, a well-designed workstation, and proper eye care, it’s entirely possible to work comfortably—even in front of a screen.

Your eyes work hard for you every day. Take good care of them 👀✨
