How to Relax Your Eyes After a Long Day

After a day spent working on a computer, driving, reading, or juggling the many demands of everyday life, it's common to experience eye fatigue. Tired eyes, blurred vision, dryness, or headaches can all be signs that your eyes need a well-deserved break.

Fortunately, a few simple habits can help relieve eye strain and restore visual comfort.

1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

When we focus on screens, we tend to blink less often. As a result, our eye muscles work harder and our eyes dry out more quickly.

To help prevent digital eye strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds.

This short break allows the focusing muscles in your eyes to relax.

2. Simply Close Your Eyes

Sometimes, the simplest solution is the most effective. Close your eyes for one or two minutes and focus on your breathing.

This brief moment of calm reduces visual stimulation and provides genuine rest for both your eyes and your mind.

3. Use a Warm Compress

Placing a clean washcloth soaked in warm water over your closed eyelids for five to ten minutes can provide soothing relief.

The warmth helps stimulate the glands along the eyelids, improving the quality of your tears and helping to relieve dry eye symptoms.

4. Remember to Blink More Often

A complete blink spreads tears evenly across the surface of the eye.

When using digital devices, our blinking rate can decrease by nearly half. Make a conscious effort to blink fully whenever your eyes begin to feel tired.

5. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can worsen the symptoms of dry eyes.

Drinking enough water throughout the day supports your body's overall function, including healthy tear production.

6. Adjust Your Screen Brightness

Screens that are too bright—or poor contrast settings—can increase visual fatigue.

Adjust the brightness of your devices to match your surroundings, use night mode in the evening if needed, and avoid direct glare on your screen whenever possible.

7. Gently Massage the Eye Area

Using clean fingertips, make gentle circular motions around your eyebrows, temples, and cheekbones.

This light massage can help release muscle tension and relieve the strain that builds up after a long day.

8. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep remains one of the best remedies for tired eyes.

During the night, your eyes rehydrate and recover from the demands of the day. Lack of sleep can contribute to dryness, redness, and the sensation of heavy, fatigued eyes.

When Should You See an Eye Care Professional?

If eye fatigue becomes frequent, severe, or is accompanied by persistent symptoms such as blurred vision, significant headaches, or increased sensitivity to light, it's important to consult an eye care professional.

These symptoms may indicate an uncorrected vision problem, more significant dry eye disease, or another condition that requires proper evaluation and treatment.
