Managing Your Time to Reduce Everyday Eye Strain

Our days often seem busier than ever. Between work, school, virtual meetings, emails, and digital entertainment, our eyes are constantly at work. While this has become part of modern life, it can also lead to tired, uncomfortable eyes by the end of the day.

The good news? A few simple time-management habits can make a significant difference in reducing eye strain and improving visual comfort.

Why do our eyes get tired?

Digital screens do not directly damage the eyes. However, they require continuous focusing, reduce how often we blink, and encourage us to maintain the same posture for extended periods.

As a result, many people experience dry eyes, temporary blurred vision, headaches, or neck and shoulder discomfort after long hours of screen use.

Schedule breaks—and actually take them

When we're focused, it's easy to lose track of time. That's why it's important to build short visual breaks into your day.

One of the simplest strategies is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds.

Some people find it helpful to set reminders or use apps that prompt them to look away from their screens.

Alternate different types of work

Spending several consecutive hours on a computer places continuous demands on your near vision.

Whenever possible, vary your activities. After working at a screen, consider making a phone call, attending an in-person meeting, organizing paperwork, or completing a task that requires less close visual focus.

Changing activities gives your eyes a chance to relax.

Build movement into your schedule

Taking a short walk, stretching, or simply standing up every hour benefits both your body and your eyes.

Movement naturally encourages you to focus on distant objects, helping your eye muscles relax after prolonged near work.

Reduce recreational screen time when possible

After spending the workday in front of a computer, it's tempting to unwind with more screen time.

Instead, try balancing your evening with activities that rely less on close visual focus, such as going for a walk, reading a printed book in good lighting, cooking, gardening, or enjoying a creative hobby.

Your eyes will appreciate the change.

Optimize your workspace

Good time management also includes creating a comfortable work environment.

Consider these simple adjustments:

  • position your screen about an arm's length away;
  • keep the top of the monitor slightly below eye level;
  • minimize glare from windows and lighting;
  • adjust screen brightness to match the room;
  • stay well hydrated throughout the day.

Remember to blink

When concentrating, we often blink much less than normal.

Each blink spreads tears across the eye's surface, helping maintain moisture and comfort.

Make a conscious effort to blink fully whenever you pause or switch tasks.

Make eye care part of your daily routine

We schedule meetings, workouts, and meals—our eye health deserves a place on the calendar too.

Simple daily habits can significantly reduce eye strain and help you stay comfortable and productive throughout the day.

Finally, don't forget that regular comprehensive eye examinations with an IRIS optometrist help ensure your vision is performing at its best and that your eyes are ready to keep up with your busy lifestyle.
