What to Know Before Buying Sunglasses for Travel

A beach getaway, a city break or a mountain hike: whatever your destination, a good pair of sunglasses deserves a place in your luggage. Before choosing a frame, here are the essentials to check.

1. Start with UV protection

Look for a UV400 label or 99 to 100% protection against UVA and UVB rays. This is the most important feature. Lens colour, a dark tint or the price of the frame cannot, on their own, tell you how much UV protection a pair provides.

2. Choose a frame that suits your destination

Sunglasses that cover your eyes well, including at the sides, help limit light entering around the lenses. This is especially useful when you spend a lot of time outdoors or near water or snow, where light reflects strongly. For active trips, make sure the frame also stays comfortably in place when you move.

3. Understand what polarized lenses do

Polarized lenses reduce distracting glare, particularly from water or snow. They can make some activities more comfortable, but polarization does not guarantee UV protection. If you choose polarized lenses, check their UV protection label as well.

4. Keep your vision clear throughout the trip

If you wear prescription glasses, consider prescription sunglasses. They let you enjoy the scenery, read signs and get around comfortably without having to choose between seeing clearly and protecting your eyes from the sun.

Finally, try your sunglasses on before you leave. They should stay in place without slipping or putting uncomfortable pressure on your face. A comfortable pair is one you’ll want to wear from your first outing to the journey home.
