Children's glasses: what to prioritize when choosing

A child's first pair of glasses is often a big step, both for them and their parents. Whether it's to correct a slight visual impairment or a condition that requires constant wear, choosing the right glasses is essential to ensure comfort, durability, and confidence.

Here are the factors to prioritize in order to make an informed choice.

1. Comfort above all else

Comfort is the number one criterion. A child who doesn't feel comfortable in their glasses is likely to take them off or break them.

Make sure that the frames:

  • fit well on the nose without slipping;
  • stay securely behind the ears without applying pressure are lightweight, flexible, and well-balanced on the face.

IRIS opticians often recommend frames specially designed for children, made from flexible materials such as silicone, which adapt to their movements and active lifestyle.

2. Strength and safety

Children move, run, fall... and their glasses have to keep up! Look for:

  • Flexible or spring hinges.
  • Unbreakable temples.
  • Polycarbonate lenses or lenses made from impact- and scratch-resistant materials.

These lenses also offer excellent UV protection, which is essential for preserving the eye health of young children.

 3. Optimal vision

The quality of the lenses makes all the difference. Your optometrist will be able to recommend the right lens treatments for your child:

  • Anti-reflective, to reduce eye strain, especially at school or in front of screens.
  • Photochromic (Transitions®), to darken in the sun and provide continuous protection against blue light and UV rays.
  • Anti-scratch, to extend the life of the glasses.

4. Style and confidence

Glasses can become a real style accessory! Involve your child in choosing the colour and shape. When they feel proud of their glasses, they are more likely to wear them.

Children's collections offer fun, colourful, and trendy frames that are perfect for expressing their personality while remaining functional.

5. Fit and follow-up

Children's faces change quickly, so it's important to schedule regular adjustments with your optician.

At IRIS, we offer a free adjustment service and personalized follow-up to ensure that glasses remain comfortable and well-positioned over time.

Choosing glasses for a child is about more than just style: it's an investment in their vision, confidence, and well-being.

By focusing on comfort, safety, and optical quality, you're helping to make learning and everyday life easier and more enjoyable for your child.
