Contact Lenses vs. Glasses

If you’re reading this, you’re probably in need of advice, or you’re simply curious. And you may probably need vision correction. And you may not be considering laser surgery (for now, anyway), so you’re hesitating between your two other options: glasses or contact lenses. If our assumptions of how you ended up on this article are correct, well buckle up, we’re about to convince you to get the best of both worlds!

Contact lenses and glasses both have pros and cons. Making the best choice depending on your situation is important. Here are some examples to help you make your choice:

Glasses are the better choice when:

  • You do not have much time to get ready in the morning (or don’t want to take too long).
  • You want your eyes to take a break. They deserve it!
  • You want to wear a stylish accessory (Glasses = Fashion).
  • You plan on having a low-activity day.
  • You might take a nap later: no need to do the whole wash-your-hands-rub-your-contacts thing before and after your nap!
  • You don’t want to be bothered with any kind of maintenance today.
  • You don’t need to correct your vision all day long, just for some activities.
  • Your eyes are very sensitive right now (it’s allergy season!) and you may experience discomfort while wearing contact lenses.

Contact lenses are the better choice when:

  • You want to wear sunglasses or blue light blocking glasses without prescription.
  • You are planning to practice a sport or an activity where you could drop or break your glasses.
  • You don’t want to wear your “face accessory” today. It doesn’t match your outfit!
  • You want to feel like you’re not wearing anything on your face; you’re in a natural mood!
  • You plan on going into rooms/areas which have different ambient temperatures throughout the day: glasses would get foggy.
  • You want to wear accessories over your head like a hat, a mask or a scarf. Glasses could get in the way!
  • You need vision correction all day long.
  • You prefer or need to have a perfect peripheral vision.
  • You travel a lot and don’t want to risk losing or breaking your glasses in the middle of your trip.

There are plenty more examples, but after reading this, you may realize that most people, and probably yourself, would enjoy the benefits of each solution at different times. And that’s why many people choose to get both! Don’t hesitate to discuss the ideal solution for you with your Optometrist: they can definitely help you out.
