Perfect vision without glasses: what to expect after surgery

Do you dream of waking up in the morning and seeing clearly without having to search for your glasses or contact lenses? Refractive surgery, such as LASIK or PRK, makes this dream a reality for many people every year. But what should you really expect after surgery?

Sharper vision... but not instantly

Most patients notice an improvement in their vision within the first few hours after surgery. However, vision may be slightly blurry, as if looking through a foggy window.

  • After 24 to 48 hours: vision improves significantly. This is particularly true with LASIK.
  • After one to two weeks: vision continues to stabilize.
  • After three months: the final results are achieved.
  • Each person heals at their own pace, and immediate good vision is not the norm, but it gradually settles in.

Normal sensations after the procedure

Certain sensations may occur in the days following surgery, including:

  • Dry eyes or a feeling of sand in the eyes
  • Slight sensitivity to light
  • Stinging or itching
  • Night vision with halos or glare

These side effects are usually temporary and diminish over the weeks. Your ophthalmologist will prescribe moisturizing, antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory drops to relieve your symptoms.

When can you resume your activities?

Activity: Generally recommended waiting period

Return to work/screen time:   1 to 2 days

Driving: As soon as vision is stable (often 24 hours)

Eye makeup:   1 week

Non-contact sports:  1 week

Swimming, spa, sauna: 1 month

Contact sports:   1 month

These waiting periods may vary depending on the technique used and healing.

20/20 vision... but not 100% guaranteed

Most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better, but it is possible that:

  • A slight residual correction may remain;
  • Vision may fluctuate for a few weeks;
  • A touch-up may be necessary in some cases (more rare).

It is also important to keep in mind that surgery does not prevent the effects of natural aging of the eyes. For example, presbyopia (difficulty seeing up close after age 40) may appear even after a successful operation.

The advantages of a life without glasses

  • Freedom in everyday life
  • No more need for contact lenses, solutions, or cleaning
  • Convenient for sports, travel, and outdoor activities
  • Increased self-confidence for many

An important decision that deserves proper support

Before the procedure, a preoperative evaluation allows your ophthalmologist to assess the health of your eyes, your vision correction, and your expectations. This is also the ideal time to ask any questions you may have.

Vision correction surgery offers incredible freedom, but it requires patience and a good understanding of the healing process. Clearer vision, everyday comfort, and renewed confidence: the results are often well worth it.
