What are the strongest prescriptions?

Every eye is unique, and some require more significant corrections than others. When we talk about “strong prescriptions,” we are referring to high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. These conditions can cause blurred vision at different distances, but fortunately, advances in optics now offer several solutions tailored to each case.

What is a strong prescription?

An ophthalmic prescription indicates the power needed to correct vision. It is expressed in diopters (D):

  • Myopia: blurred distance vision.

High myopia generally corresponds to -6.00 D or more.

The more negative the number, the more blurred the person's distance vision is.

  • Hyperopia: blurred near vision.

High hyperopia is often +4.00 D or more.

The eyes must constantly “strain” to accommodate, which often causes fatigue and headaches.

  • Astigmatism: distorted vision at all distances.

This results from an irregular cornea. A correction of more than 2.00 D is considered severe.

  • Presbyopia: natural loss of near focus, related to age.

It is not measured in terms of “strength” in the same way as myopia, but it can be added to other existing disorders.

Correction solutions for strong prescriptions

Glasses

Modern lenses, such as high-index lenses, can correct strong prescriptions without being too thick.

  • Thinner lenses: lighter and more attractive.
  • Anti-reflective and anti-scratch treatments: improve visual comfort and durability.
  • Aspheric lenses: reduce peripheral distortion.

At IRIS, Apogee lenses are an excellent option: they are custom-designed according to the frame, the position of wear, and the physiology of each wearer for precise and natural vision.

Contact lenses

For people who are very nearsighted or have astigmatism, contact lenses offer more natural vision without the magnifying or shrinking effect that thick glasses can produce.

  • Toric lenses for astigmatism.
  • Rigid gas permeable lenses: very precise, often used for strong corrections.
  • Custom-made lenses: adapted to complex corneal geometries.

Refractive surgery

The IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic offers safe surgical options for long-lasting vision correction:

  • LASIK or PRK: for cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.  As long as it is safe for the patient.
  • Phakic implants: for very strong prescriptions when laser surgery is not recommended.
  • Lens replacement (RLE): often offered after age 45 to correct presbyopia and other vision defects.

Each patient undergoes a comprehensive evaluation to determine the most appropriate solution for their eye condition.

A strong prescription is no longer an obstacle to clear, comfortable vision. Thanks to the precision of modern glasses, latest-generation contact lenses, and safe surgical options, it is possible to achieve sharp, natural vision, even with high corrections.
