Should I wear sunglasses even when the weather isn’t nice?

We often associate sunglasses with hot, sunny days… but did you know they’re just as essential when the sky is grey?

Even when the sun isn’t shining brightly, your eyes are still exposed to invisible rays that can, over time, harm your eye health.

UV rays: present, even without the sun

Ultraviolet (UV) rays don’t disappear when clouds roll in. In fact, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate cloud cover.

This means that:

  • Your eyes are exposed even on a cloudy day
  • Light intensity may be lower… but the risks are still very much present

Result: Not wearing sunglasses because the weather isn’t nice, is a false sense of security.

Why protect your eyes every day?

Repeated exposure to UV rays can contribute to several eye problems:

  • Premature aging of the eyes
  • Development of cataracts
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Eye irritation or dryness

Protecting your eyes is therefore an investment in your long-term visual health.

Situations where we (often) forget our sunglasses

Certain conditions are particularly misleading:

Overcast weather

The light is softer, but UV rays are still present.

Winter and snow

Snow can reflect up to 80% of UV rays, increasing exposure.

Fog or hazy weather

Even if the sun is invisible, UV rays penetrate the atmosphere.

Choosing the right sunglasses

Not all sunglasses are created equal. For effective protection, make sure your lenses:

  • Offer 100% UV protection (UV400)
  • Are suited to your lifestyle (sports, driving, everyday use)
  • Are comfortable and fit well

IRIS Tip: Lens tint is not an indicator of protection. Dark lenses without a UV filter can actually be more dangerous, as they cause the pupil to dilate.

And in everyday life?

Making sunglasses a habit, even on cloudy days, is one of the simplest ways to protect your eyes. Think of it like sunscreen: you don’t save it just for scorching hot days!

Even when the sun isn’t shining, UV rays are still present year-round, making sunglasses an essential part of your daily routine. Consistent protection helps preserve your long-term eye health, reducing the risk of damage caused by invisible exposure. At IRIS, caring for your vision means building simple habits that support your eyes every day, no matter the weather.
