Skiing: how to choose your goggles?

Whether you're an occasional skier or a powder enthusiast, good vision is essential to fully enjoy the slopes... and for your safety. Choosing ski goggles is not just a matter of style: it directly affects your visual comfort, performance, and protection from the elements.

1. 100% UV protection: essential

In the mountains, exposure to UV rays is much more intense than at sea level, mainly due to the sun's reflection off the snow. It is therefore crucial to choose goggles that offer 100% UV protection (UVA and UVB) to protect your eyes in the short and long term.

2. Lens tint: adapt to the conditions

The colour of the lenses plays a key role in the perception of contrasts and relief.

  • Dark lenses (category 3 or 4): ideal for very sunny weather.
  • Yellow, orange, or pink lenses: excellent for cloudy or foggy weather, as they improve contrast.
  • Photochromic lenses: these automatically adapt to the light, changing from clear to dark depending on the conditions. A very versatile choice for regular skiers.

Tip: good contrast makes it easier to read the terrain and anticipate bumps or patches of ice.

3. Anti-fog: a non-negotiable criterion

Nothing is more unpleasant than fogged-up goggles in the middle of a run. Opt for:

  • Double lenses (which limit condensation),
  • A high-quality anti-fog treatment,
  • Good ventilation built into the frame.

4. Comfort and fit: for skiing without distractions

Goggles should fit your face perfectly without any pressure points.

  • Check that they are compatible with your helmet.
  • Choose soft, hypoallergenic foam.
  • Make sure the elastic is adjustable and stays in place, even with sustained movement.

5. Field of vision and optical quality

A wide field of vision improves peripheral perception, which is essential for seeing other skiers and anticipating obstacles. The optical quality of the lens is just as important to avoid visual distortion, eye strain, and headaches.

6. Prescription ski goggles: yes, it's possible

If you wear prescription glasses, there are several options available:

  • OTG (Over The Glasses) ski goggles designed to be worn over your glasses,
  • Or solutions with integrated prescription lenses, available from certain eye care professionals.

An optician can guide you toward the most comfortable and safest solution.

Choosing the right ski goggles means investing in:

  1. Maximum UV protection,
  2. Clear, high-contrast vision,
  3. Long-lasting comfort,
  4. And greater safety on the slopes.

Before hitting the slopes, take the time to consult an eye care professional. At IRIS, our professionals are here to help you find the ski goggles that are perfectly suited to your needs... so that your only concern is enjoying the winter.
