The typical journey of a refractive surgery patient

For many people who have worn glasses or contact lenses for years, refractive surgery offers the possibility of regaining clear vision without correction. Whether for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia, this procedure can transform everyday life. But what does the journey of a patient who wants to have surgery actually look like?

1. Making an appointment: the first step toward clearer vision: The first step is simply to contact the clinic and book a consultation. This meeting is essential to determine whether you are a good candidate for surgery. Each eye is unique, and several factors must be evaluated before making an informed decision.

2. The preoperative consultation: a complete and thorough examination: During this visit, you will undergo a series of tests and ultra-precise measurements: corneal thickness and curvature, eye pressure, tear film quality, retinal evaluation, etc.

Please note: the consultation and surgery do not take place on the same day.

During this examination, the optometrist will usually dilate your pupils in order to examine the back of the eye, particularly the retina. This dilation can blur your vision for a few hours, which prevents surgery from taking place on the same day and means you will need to arrange for a driver or transportation for your return home.

At the end of the consultation, the recommended technique (LASIK, PKR/PRK, lens replacement, etc.) will be explained to you and time will be taken to answer your questions.

The goal is to help you make an informed, calm, and personalized decision.

3. Preparation before surgery: If you wear contact lenses, your professional will probably ask you to stop wearing them a week before the consultation and procedure so that your cornea can return to its natural shape.

Simple instructions are also provided: do not wear makeup on the day of surgery, arrive with someone to accompany you, plan a day of rest, etc.

4. The day of surgery: quick and painless: On the day of your surgery, the team will welcome you and review the steps with you. Refractive surgery is quick, usually taking less than 20 minutes for both eyes.

  • Local anesthesia in the form of drops makes the procedure painless.
  • Many patients are surprised at how calmly and quickly everything goes!
  • After surgery, your vision may be blurry or sensitive to light for a few hours. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed to promote optimal healing.

5. Postoperative follow-up: a key step: An initial follow-up is usually scheduled for the next day, then 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months later, depending on the technique used. Most patients notice a rapid improvement in their vision, although it may take a few weeks for it to stabilize completely.

6. Return to activities

  • Computer work: often the next day or the day after, depending on comfort.
  • Light physical activity: a few days later.
  • Water sports/eye makeup: wait according to the surgeon's recommendations (ranging from 1 to 3 weeks depending on the technique).

The golden rule: follow the instructions and protect your eyes, especially in the sun.

The refractive surgery process is structured, safe, and personalized. The preoperative consultation ensures that your eyes are in excellent health and that the chosen technique will give you the best results.
