We spend an average of several hours a day in front of a screen: computer, phone, tablet, or television. The result? More and more people are suffering from digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome.
But what exactly is it, and more importantly, how can it be prevented?
What is digital eye strain?
Digital eye strain refers to a set of symptoms related to prolonged screen use. When we stare at a screen for a long time:
- We blink less often (up to 60% less!)
- Our eyes have to constantly focus
- We are exposed to blue light
- Our posture is often poor
This combination creates an overload for our visual system.
The most common symptoms
Digital eye strain can manifest itself as:
- Blurred vision or difficulty focusing
- Dry, red, or irritated eyes
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Headaches
- Sensitivity to light
- Neck and shoulder pain
In children and adolescents, intensive screen use can also contribute to the progression of myopia.
Why do screens cause so much eye strain?
Unlike printed text, a screen emits light. Characters are made up of pixels, which makes it harder for the eye to focus.
In addition, prolonged concentration reduces natural blinking, which dries out the surface of the eye. The result is discomfort and visual fatigue.
How can you prevent digital eye strain?
The good news is that a few simple habits can make all the difference.
Apply the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds.
Adjust your workstation
- Screen about an arm's length away
- Slightly lower than eye level
- Adequate ambient lighting, without glare
Remember to blink: It may seem trivial, but blinking deliberately helps rehydrate the surface of the eye.
Wear suitable glasses: Glasses with anti-reflective coating or blue light filters can improve visual comfort, especially if you work long hours at a screen.
Consult an optometrist: An eye exam can determine whether you need a prescription or whether your current glasses are suitable for digital use.
