What is lens replacement surgery?

What is lens replacement surgery?

Lens replacement surgery, also known as clear lens refractive surgery or intraocular lens (IOL) surgery, is an increasingly popular procedure for correcting vision permanently. It is mainly intended for people aged 45 and over who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses, particularly due to presbyopia or refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

A simple principle: replacing the lens with an artificial lens

The lens is a small natural lens located inside the eye. With age, it loses its flexibility, which is when we talk about presbyopia. The surgery involves:

  1. Removing the natural lens, which often becomes rigid with age;
  2. Replacing it with a custom-made intraocular lens (IOL), chosen according to lifestyle, visual needs, and desired correction.

This artificial lens remains in place for life and requires no maintenance.

A procedure similar to cataract surgery

Technically, the surgery is very similar to cataract surgery, except that the lens is not yet clouded. The surgeon makes a small incision, fragments the lens using ultrasound, and inserts the new lens.

  • Duration of surgery: approximately 15 minutes per eye
  • Anesthesia: drops only
  • Return home: same day

Recovery is usually quick: many patients notice an improvement within the first 24 to 48 hours.

Why choose lens replacement?

Freedom from glasses

Most people over the age of 45 have to juggle several pairs of glasses. Modern intraocular lenses provide clear vision at different distances, reducing the need for glasses.

A lasting solution

Unlike LASIK surgery, this surgery eliminates any future risk of cataracts, since the lens has already been replaced.

Lenses adapted to your lifestyle

There are several types of intraocular lenses:

  • Monofocal: clear vision at a specific distance
  • Toric: correction of astigmatism
  • Multifocal or extended depth of field: excellent vision at multiple distances

Your ophthalmologist will recommend the lens best suited to your condition and lifestyle.

Who is this a good option for?

Lens replacement surgery is particularly beneficial for people:

  • Aged 45 and over
  • With mature presbyopia
  • With severe myopia or hyperopia
  • Who are not good candidates for laser surgery (cornea too thin, advanced dry eye, too high a correction)

It is generally not recommended for young adults or those who could benefit from LASIK.

Lens replacement surgery is a modern, long-lasting, and safe solution for correcting vision and reducing dependence on glasses, while eliminating cataracts. Thanks to technological advances, this procedure offers excellent visual results and a quick recovery for thousands of people every year.
