Qu’est-ce que la myopie évolutive chez les enfants, et pourquoi faut-il la contrôler?

What is progressive myopia in children, and why does it need to be monitored?

Progressive myopia is an increasingly common vision disorder in children. In practical terms, children with this condition can see clearly up close but have blurred vision when looking at distant objects. What distinguishes it from “stable” myopia is that it progresses over time, often rapidly, especially during the years of growth.

What happens in the eye?

In a nearsighted child, the eye grows a little too long. As a result, images are formed in front of the retina rather than directly on it. The longer the eye becomes, the more nearsightedness increases. It is this phenomenon of progressive elongation that we seek to slow down.

Why does myopia progress in some children?

Several factors may be involved:

  • Heredity (one or both parents are nearsighted)
  • Time spent in front of screens or doing close-up work
  • Lack of time spent outdoors, now recognized as a key factor
  • Age of onset: the younger the age at which myopia begins, the greater the risk of progression

Why is it so important to control myopia?

Controlling myopia is not just about improving vision with glasses. Above all, it is about reducing long-term risks. High myopia in adulthood increases the likelihood of more serious eye complications, such as:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Certain macular diseases

By slowing its progression in childhood, we can help protect future visual health.

How can we slow the progression of myopia?

The good news is that there are now effective and safe solutions available that are suitable for children, including:

  • Specialized eyeglasses for myopia control
  • Contact lenses designed to slow progression
  • Recommendations on lifestyle habits, such as increasing time spent outdoors and managing screen time

The optometrist evaluates each child individually to recommend the solution best suited to their age, lifestyle, and vision development.

Regular monitoring makes all the difference

The key to success is early detection and regular monitoring. An annual eye exam (or more frequent if recommended) allows the strategy to be adjusted and action to be taken at the right time.

Progressive myopia in children is a common condition, but one that should not be taken lightly. Controlling it means investing in tomorrow's vision, reducing future risks, and giving your child a better quality of life, both today and in the long term.

If you have any doubts or notice that your child is squinting, moving closer to screens, or complaining of headaches, don’t wait : scheduling an eye exam is a simple step that can provide clarity, peace of mind, and the right support for their vision.
