Caring For Your Contact Lenses: Tips and Best Practices

Wearing contact lenses is a practical solution for correcting vision without glasses, but looking after your lenses properly is essential to avoid eye health problems. Proper care ensures comfort and safety while prolonging the life of your contacts. Here are a few tips and best practices to guide you through this essential routine.

Wash your hands thoroughly

Before handling your contact lenses, always wash your hands with soap, preferably unscented, then dry them with a clean, lint-free towel. Dirty hands can introduce bacteria into your eyes, leading to infections such as keratitis.

Use the right solutions

Using a lens care solution specifically designed for your lenses is crucial. Avoid using tap water, saliva or non-recommended solutions, as these substances may contain harmful pathogens to your eyes. Your Optometrist will be able to advise you on the solution best suited to your needs.

Clean and disinfect daily

After removing your lenses, rub them gently in the palm of your hand with a few drops of solution. Even “no rub” lenses will benefit from this simple gesture, which removes deposits and impurities. Then, rinse them with fresh solution before placing them in a clean case for the night.

Change your lens case regularly

A lens case can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria. We recommend replacing it every 1 to 3 months, cleaning it daily with lens care solution, and leaving it to air-dry upside down.

Follow the replacement schedule

Whether you wear disposable contacts daily, weekly, or monthly, it's essential to respect the length of use recommended by your Optometrist or manufacturer. Wearing contacts beyond the recommended period can lead to a build-up of deposits and bacteria and increase the risk of eye infection or irritation.

Avoid sleeping with your contacts

Unless your contacts are specifically designed for extended wear, it is not advisable to sleep with them. Sleeping with contacts reduces oxygenation to the eye, increasing the risk of inflammation and infection.

Be aware of any discomfort

If you experience discomfort, redness or blurred vision while wearing your contacts, remove them immediately and consult your Optometrist. These signs may indicate an infection or complication requiring prompt treatment.

Daily care of your contact lenses is essential to protect your eyes and ensure comfortable wear. By following these best practices, you'll not only extend the life of your contacts but, above all, maintain the health of your eyes.
