Question to an Optometrist: What are my options if I have an eye emergency?

If you have an eye emergency, it's possible to consult an optometrist rather than going straight to the hospital emergency room.  The first thing to do if you have an eye emergency is to call your trusted optometrist and ask for an emergency appointment.

Eye emergency: optometrist or ophthalmologist?

When you contact IRIS boutiques for an eye emergency, you'll be seen by an optometrist, usually the same day or, if that's not possible, as soon as possible. You don't need a referral to be seen by an optometrist in an emergency; you can simply call us and make an appointment, whether you're an existing customer or not. We suggest that you call us before coming into the store, so that we can better help you with your eye problem.

Most emergency cases can be seen by an optometrist. However, if the problem seems more complex and requires an ophthalmological follow-up or specific treatment, your optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmology.  To have a consultation with an ophthalmologist, you need a referral from an optometrist or your family doctor.

If necessary, your optometrist can prescribe medication. Whether in the form of drops, ointments, gels or certain oral medications, they can solve a wide range of eye health problems and bring you rapid relief, while saving you a trip to the hospital emergency room.

Cost of an emergency consultation

An emergency consultation with an optometrist is not free. The government covers part of the cost, i.e., the diagnosis. However, the foolw-ups and pharmaceutical treatment are not covered. Part of the consultation is therefore at your own expense, although it may be reimbursed by some private insurance companies. The advantage of consulting an optometrist in an eye emergency is that you'll get an appointment quickly, avoiding a long wait in the hospital emergency room. What's more, you'll be under the care of an eye specialist who will be able to refer you elsewhere if necessary.
