Red Eyes: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Red eyes are a common condition that can be caused by many factors. Although often benign, this condition can sometimes indicate a more serious health problem.

Causes of red eyes

Red eyes can be caused by several factors, ranging from minor irritations to serious infections.

Fatigue and eye strain

Spending long hours in front of a computer screen, reading in low-light conditions, or not getting enough sleep can cause eye fatigue, which can lead to red eyes.

Allergies

Seasonal allergies or allergies to specific substances such as pollen, dust or animal fur can cause inflammation of the eyes, making them red and irritated.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, often called “pink eye,” is an infection of the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the eye's white part. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses or allergens.

Dry eyes

Insufficient artificial tears or excessive tear evaporation can lead to dry eyes, causing redness and burning.

Uveitis

Uveitis is an inflammation of the eye's middle layer (uvea) and can be caused by infections, autoimmune diseases or other inflammatory conditions.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious condition in which excessive pressure inside the eye damages the optic nerve. An acute attack of glaucoma can cause red eyes accompanied by intense pain and blurred vision.

Trauma or foreign body

Eye trauma or the presence of a foreign body in the eye can cause irritation and redness.

Symptoms associated with red eyes

A variety of other symptoms can accompany red eyes.

  • Itching: often present in cases of allergy or conjunctivitis.
  • Excessive tearing: This may be due to allergies or irritation.
  • Secretions: yellow or green discharge may indicate bacterial infection.
  • Pain: intense pain may indicate a more serious problem, such as glaucoma.
  • Blurred vision may accompany conditions such as uveitis or glaucoma.
  • Sensitivity to light: common in infections or inflammation.

Treatment of red eyes depends on the underlying cause

Rest and hygiene

For red eyes caused by fatigue or eye strain, it's essential to give the eyes a rest, use screens in moderation and maintain good hand and contact lens hygiene.

Eye drops

  • Artificial tears: for dry eyes.
  • Antihistamine drops: for allergies.
  • Antibiotic drops: for bacterial infections.

Cold compresses

Applying cold compresses can reduce the inflammation and discomfort of red eyes, especially in cases of allergy or conjunctivitis.

Oral medications

In cases of severe allergy, oral antihistamines may be prescribed.

Medical consultation

If red eyes are accompanied by intense pain, blurred vision or persist despite home treatment, it's crucial to consult an Optometrist for a thorough assessment and appropriate treatment.

Prevention

To prevent red eyes, we recommend:

  • Protecting your eyes from irritants such as smoke and dust.
  • Using protective eyewear in high-risk environments.
  • Taking regular breaks when using screens.

Red eye is a common condition that can be caused by various factors. Although often not serious, it is essential to recognize the signs that require medical attention. By understanding the causes and appropriate treatments, you can better manage this condition and maintain the health of your eyes.
