All eyes on Dr. Oesa Eng, a new Optometrist within the IRIS family!

At the end of 2020, we were thrilled to welcome Dr. Oesa Eng within our big IRIS family! If you are a patient at IRIS in downtown Edmonton on 106th street or at IRIS in Sherwood Park, you might have seen her during your visit! We thought it would be nice to interview her to introduce her to all of her patients and the other professionals of our network.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, she received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Science with distinction at the University of Alberta. She then attended the New England College of Optometry in Boston to pursue her Doctor of Optometry Degree. During her time in Boston, she partook in a 9-month clinical internship in several areas of specialization, including community health, ocular disease, geriatrics, pediatrics, dry eye and low vision. She also participated in a 3-month clinical rotation at the Manchester Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Hampshire, focusing on ocular disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and retinal vascular disease. She is a member of the ACO and AAO and can provide eye examinations in English, French and Cantonese. She completed a certification course in 2014 in oral therapeutics, glaucoma and advanced diagnostics. Dr. Eng also volunteers for the Optometry Examining Board of Canada.

Among her team, she is known to be passionate about educating her patients about the importance of eye health and enriching their lives through vision. She also adds, “My previous background as a Registered Dietitian makes me particularly interested in how nutrition can impact eye health and disease conditions such as diabetes and macular degeneration.’’ Outside of work, she enjoys baking/cooking, running, skiing, travelling and spending time with her family. When asked what advice she would like to give to all her patients, she answered: “You are your own best health advocate, and I will do everything in my power to help and educate you. I feel privileged to be part of your health care team and look forward to learning more about you as I facilitate decisions, understanding, education and the best care and treatment regarding your ocular health. I look forward to building long-term relationships with my patients and welcoming them into the IRIS family.’’

Dr. Eng concluded by telling us why she chose to join forces with IRIS and
what she likes the most about her job: “I enjoy working with IRIS because it feels like being part of a large family where we are all supportive and caring of each other and our patients. I feel a
sense of belonging, purpose and pride when I go to work. I am truly blessed to have a career that allows me to connect with new people and help them achieve their best visual potential.’’
