Reading glasses: when should you consider wearing them?

Is your reading suddenly becoming a little blurry? Do you find yourself holding your book or phone further away from your eyes? If these situations sound familiar, it may be time to consider reading glasses.

Why does near vision change with age?

From around the age of 40, near vision often begins to deteriorate naturally. This phenomenon, called presbyopia, is caused by the gradual loss of flexibility in the lens of the eye. As a result, it becomes more difficult to focus on nearby objects, such as letters on a menu or messages on a screen.

The telltale signs

Here are some clues that reading glasses may be useful for you:

  • You hold text further away to read it better.
  • You experience eye strain or headaches after reading.
  • You need more light to see clearly.
  • Your eyes become dry or irritated after long periods of close work.

If you experience these symptoms, a comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist is the best way to confirm presbyopia and get the correction that's right for you.

Reading glasses: custom-made or ready-to-wear?

Reading glasses are available at pharmacies, but they are not suitable for everyone. These models have the same strength on both sides and do not take into account the differences between your two eyes or your pupillary distance.

Glasses prescribed by an optometrist, on the other hand, offer clear vision, lasting comfort, and prevent eye strain.

Solutions tailored to your lifestyle

Depending on your needs, your optometrist may recommend:

  • Classic reading glasses for occasional activities.
  • Progressive lenses for an all-in-one solution (distance and near vision).
  • Office lenses designed for optimal comfort in front of the computer.

Each option is customized to your age, work, habits, and visual comfort.

When to consult?

At the first signs of blurred vision or fatigue, it is recommended that you have a comprehensive eye exam. Even if you still see “fairly well,” a small adjustment can greatly improve your everyday comfort.
