Results of IRIS Mundial month 2025

February - IRIS Mundial Month

Thanks to the generosity of IRIS stores and the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic, an impressive total of $85,940 was raised during the month of February. This amount comes from the IRIS stores, which contributed $10 per pair of glasses sold, and $2,250 from the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic, which contributes $25 per surgery performed.

These contributions enable IRIS Mundial to pursue its mission of providing eye care to vulnerable populations around the world. But behind these impressive figures are the committed people who give their time and expertise in the field. Among them, optometrist and volunteer Dr. Martine Gagnon shares her experience of the mission to Podor, Senegal in January 2025.

Dr. Martine Gagnon recounts her journey: A life-changing mission

“Getting involved with IRIS Mundial means discovering another facet of our profession as optometrists, where each examination can literally change a life.” - Dr. Martine Gagnon

Before leaving on their mission, volunteers undergo rigorous preparation. Information sessions cover health measures, logistics, cultural particularities and practical advice to facilitate their adaptation on site.

“These meetings are essential, not only to ensure that they are well prepared, but also to create bonds with the team before they even arrive in the field,” explains Dr. Gagnon.

Experiencing a humanitarian mission from the inside

Once at their destination, volunteers are immersed in a reality where every gesture counts.

“We start very early in the morning and work non-stop. The aim is to see as many patients as possible every day. Some of them travel miles to see us. The emotion is palpable when we put glasses on someone who has never seen clearly before,” says Dr. Gagnon.

The days are organized in several stages:

  • Patient registration
  • Visual acuity test
  • Preliminary examinations
  • Eye health examination
  • Refraction and prescription
  • Glasses and sunglasses dispensing

Every evening, the team enjoys a well-deserved moment of relaxation, sharing anecdotes and reflections on the day's experiences.

A commitment worth making

Taking part in a mission with IRIS Mundial requires a financial commitment: volunteers cover their airfare, accommodation and meals. These expenses are considered a donation and are tax-deductible.

“Yes, it's a personal investment, but the impact we make on the ground is priceless. It's a profound human experience that leaves a lasting impression,” says Dr. Gagnon.
