Is Your Child’s Eye Exam Covered by Health Care?

Back to school is coming! Has your child seen the optometrist this year? Since 80% of what a child learns occurs through their eyes, it is important to make sure that they see well before going back to school.

Did you know that most provinces cover the cost of eye exams for children?

Here is a summary of the government’s health coverage for optometry services in each province where an IRIS store is located:

New Brunswick
Although there is no universal government coverage for eye exams in the Province of New Brunswick, there are special programs for underprivileged children under the age of 18. Plus, all 4 year old children in NB are entitled to one free eye examination. In both programs, should glasses be required, they will be provided by the province. Children under the age of 18 receive free optometry services covered by the RAMQ public plan. Eye exams are covered under this plan.

-At 6 months old

-Before entering school (4-5 years old)
-Every year, from 6 years old to adulthood

Do not wait any longer, plan your young one’s annual eye exam to make sure that they can clearly see the blackboard throughout the school year!
