Seasonal allergies and puffy eyes: what to do?

Seasonal allergies can be a nightmare for the eyes. Itching, redness, watery eyes and especially swollen eyelids are common symptoms when pollen fills the air. If every spring or autumn means discomfort for your eyes, here are a few tips on how to soothe these symptoms and regain a fresh look.

Why do allergies cause puffy eyes?

Seasonal allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to allergens such as pollen, dust or mold. When these particles come into contact with the eyes, the body releases histamine, a chemical that causes inflammation and fluid build-up, resulting in swollen eyelids.

How can I relieve puffy eyes caused by allergies?

Avoid contact with the allergen

  • Keep windows closed during periods of heavy pollination.
  • Use an air purifier to filter out indoor allergens.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors to limit pollen contact with your eyes.
  • Change your clothes and wash your face after going outdoors.

Use cold compresses

Applying a cold compress to your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes reduces inflammation and provides immediate relief. You can use a washcloth soaked in cold water or cooled green tea bags.

Moisturize your eyes with artificial tears

Lubricating eye drops help eliminate allergens and soothe irritation. Opt for preservative-free artificial tears if you use them frequently.

Use antihistamines

Antihistamines (tablets or eye drops) help reduce allergic reactions. Some are available over the counter, but if symptoms are severe, an optometrist can recommend a more suitable treatment.

Avoid rubbing your eyes

Tempting as it may be, rubbing your eyes aggravates inflammation and can make symptoms worse. If irritation is too strong, apply a cold compress rather than giving in to the urge to rub.

When should you consult an optometrist?

If your eyes remain swollen despite these precautions, or if you experience unusual pain, a consultation with an optometrist may be advisable. They will be able to rule out other conditions, and suggest a more targeted treatment.

By applying these tips, you can limit the effects of seasonal allergies on your eyes and enjoy the fine weather without discomfort!
