Can I Wear Contact Lenses to Correct My Astigmatism?

The answer is yes! If your prescription includes an astigmatism correction, there is no reason to deprive yourself from the freedom and convenience of contact lenses! However, it should be known that many options exist on the market, and they are not all equal. Contacts that correct astigmatism are pretty particular and we want you to be a well-informed customer, so take hold of our hand and follow us during this short lesson!

There are 2 main characteristics of an astigmatic eye that are considered by contact lens manufacturers:

First, since your cornea is more ellipsoidal than spherical, your eye has difficulty seeing at all distances. Ah! The joys of astigmatism! Therefore, depending on how far you are looking, the correction needs for your vision will vary. So, you need a multifocal lens, which procures different focusing power in different areas of your cornea. Thus, whether you’re consulting the latest news on your iPad or attending your niece’s soccer game, your vision will always be clear. (Because she would certainly be disappointed if you were to miss her best goal!)

The second important criteria is: if your lens rotates several degrees over the course of the day because of your inevitable blinking, the different focusing powers of the lens won’t be aligned with the right areas of your eye, causing vision distortion. Therefore, you need a lens that cannot rotate!

Contact lens manufacturers have to offer a product that meets those two criteria. Let’s take one of our favourite options as an example: The ULTRA Multifocal for Astigmatism lenses by Bausch & Lomb. First, they feature large areas of consistent focusing power for the near, intermediate and distance zones. Secondly, the lower hemisphere of the lens is stabilized with a ballast that keeps it from rotating. And those characteristics don’t imply any compromise when it comes to comfort, they are conceived to remain hydrated all day!

Your optician is always there to help you to choose contact lenses that meet your eyes’ needs. Don’t hesitate to ask them questions!
