Eye cancer: symptoms, diagnosis and treatments

Eye cancer is a rare but serious disease that can affect various parts of the eye, including the retina, iris, choroid and eyelids. Detected early, it can be effectively treated, which underlines the importance of regular optometric follow-up.

Symptoms of eye cancer

Symptoms of eye cancer can vary depending on the type and location of the tumor. Here are some signs to watch out for:

  • Blurred vision or sudden loss of vision
  • Appearance of a dark spot on the iris
  • Shadows, flashes of light or wavy lines in the visual field
  • A visible mass on the eye or eyelid
  • Persistent redness or pain in the eye (rare)

As these symptoms may be confused with other eye conditions, a consultation with your optometrist is essential for an accurate diagnosis.

Diagnosis of eye cancer

The diagnosis of eye cancer is based on several medical tests:

  • Complete optometric examination: The optometrist uses an ophthalmoscope or slit lamp to examine the internal structures of the eye.
  • Medical imaging: Tests such as ocular ultrasound, MRI or CT scan can detect the presence and extent of a tumor.
  • Biopsy: In some cases, tissue samples may be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

Different treatments

The choice of treatment depends on the type, size and location of the tumor. Options include:

  • Radiotherapy: Using radiation to destroy cancer cells. It is often used for small tumors.
  • Surgery: When the tumor is more advanced, surgery may be required to remove the tumor, or even the entire eye in extreme cases (enucleation).
  • Chemotherapy: Used primarily for tumors that have spread outside the eye.
  • Laser therapy: Can be used to destroy certain smaller tumors.
  • Prevention and monitoring

Although there is no guaranteed way to prevent eye cancer, certain measures can reduce the risk:

  • Wear UV-protective sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful rays.
  • Consult an optometrist regularly, especially if you have a family history of eye cancer.
  • Report any unusual changes in vision or eye appearance to a healthcare professional.

Eye cancer is a rare condition, but early diagnosis greatly increases the chances of recovery. Increased vigilance for symptoms and regular check-ups with an optometrist can make all the difference. If you notice any changes in your vision or the appearance of your eyes, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
