Infectious conjunctivitis, often called “pink eye,” is an inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Although generally benign, this condition can be very uncomfortable and contagious.
Common symptoms
• Eye redness: due to inflammation of the blood vessels in the conjunctiva.
• Discharge: thick, yellowish discharge in the case of bacterial infection or watery discharge in the case of viral infection.
• Itching or burning sensation.
• Sticky eyelids on waking, particularly in bacterial cases.
• Sensitivity to light (in some cases).
If you experience these symptoms, it's important to consult an Optometrist for a precise diagnosis.
Treatment according to cause:
Bacterial conjunctivitis
• Antibiotic drops or ointment: These treatments, prescribed by an Optometrist, accelerate healing.
• Clean eyelids and lashes with a clean compress soaked in lukewarm water.
Viral conjunctivitis
• There is no specific treatment for viral infections, which generally disappear within 1-2 weeks.
• Cold or hot compresses: to relieve discomfort.
• Artificial tears: to hydrate the eye.
Symptom management
• Avoid touching your eyes or sharing towels, pillows or make-up.
• Wash your hands frequently to limit the spread of infection.
• Change pillowcases and towels regularly.
When should you consult an Optometrist?
Consult an Optometrist or doctor as soon as possible if:
• Symptoms persist for more than a few days.
• You feel intense pain.
• Your vision is affected.
• You experience increased sensitivity to light or severe swelling.
Prevention
Infectious conjunctivitis is highly contagious, so it's essential to take the following steps to prevent its spread:
• Wash your hands frequently, especially after touching your eyes.
• Avoid sharing personal items such as contact lenses, cases or cosmetics.
• Regularly disinfect contact surfaces, especially telephones and door handles.
• Replace or disinfect your contact lenses if you are affected.
Infectious conjunctivitis is unpleasant but can be effectively managed with good hygiene and, if necessary, prescribed treatment. If you have doubts or symptoms worsen, don't hesitate to consult an optometrist.
Take care of your eyes; they're precious.
