A Reminder for Your Eyes

You spend long hours on your digital screens and may write and read a lot. Perhaps you feel eye fatigue and a feeling of dryness in your eyes. Fortunately, there are tips to solve this fatigue and discomfort. Here are some tips for health and comfort for your eyes.

Follow the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This is one of the most important things you can do. It helps rest your eyes and prevent fatigue. 

Blink more often. Make an effort to blink when you work to prevent dry eyes.

Exercise your eyes. Hold a pen 20 cm away from your eyes. Stare at the tip of the pen, then stare at a distant point, then stare at the pen again. Repeat 10 times, then move the pen closer and repeat the exercise.

Take breaks. Close your eyes for 20 seconds and focus on your breathing. This is good for your eyes, but it also helps reduce stress.

Try lubricating eye solutions. It's an easy way to combat dry eyes; a few drops a day is all you need. Lubricating solutions are great for contact lens wearers, but everyone benefits from moistening their eyes. Note that lubricating solutions are different from red-eye solutions. According to the College of Optometrists, products designed to relieve red eye can make it worse. Avoid using them too often, as the blood vessels in the eye will no longer be able to contract on their own.

Reduce glare. Make sure your workspace is not too bright by turning down the lights and blocking glare from the sun. If you wear glasses, ask your optometrist for anti-glare lenses. 

Adjust the screen brightness, text size, and contrast to make reading easier. If using an e-reader, opt for a screen without a backlight; some options can replicate a traditional paper reading experience.

Remember to rest and relax. Fatigue and stress are significant factors that contribute to eye strain. It is crucial to get more rest and sleep.
