Artificial intelligence for the detection of eye diseases
Always on the lookout and at the forefront of new technologies, IRIS entered into a partnership with Diagnos in June 2021. This collaboration allows IRIS patients to be screened by a retinal camera assisted by artificial intelligence. The use of artificial intelligence raises the standards for quality of care.
As of June 2021, 10 IRIS stores have been working closely with the Diagnos team. The Artificial Intelligence on Retinal Imaging project is a first in our industry. IRIS has the mandate to implement, through its network, artificial intelligence in the context of optometric practice. This technology combines the strength of its databases of fundus images with advanced diagnostic technology to provide a new tool to IRIS optometrists and a new service to patients.
WHO IS DIAGNOS
Founded in 1998, Diagnos is a Canadian company specializing in data mining and artificial intelligence. Diagnos started conducting health research activities in 2005. Their first vision screening solution was launched in 2009, the year it received Health Canada certification for medical devices.
Diagnos’ analysis platform is called CARA for Computer Assisted Retina Analysis. CARA’s image enhancement algorithms provide sharper, clearer and more analyzable retinal images. CARA is approved for commercialization by the following regulatory agencies: Health Canada, FDA (United States), CE (Europe), COFEPRIS (Mexico), and Saudi FDA (Saudi Arabia).
MORE EFFICIENT TOOLS FOR BETTER PREVENTION OF EYE DISEASES
Artificial intelligence in optometry makes it easier and faster to detect eye disease during eye examinations. This system analyzes retinal images and provides optometrists with additional data to facilitate diagnosis.
With artificial intelligence, it is possible to detect certain diseases that have a significant impact on eye health. Fundus imaging can detect conditions such as:
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Hypertensive retinopathy
- Macular degeneration
- Glaucoma
In addition to detecting these conditions, retinal camera screening assisted by artificial intelligence helps determine the stage and rate of progression. As of January 2023, IRIS has performed more than 10,000 artificial intelligence analyses on fundus photos for this project.
Annual eye health screening with artificial intelligence can help detect diseases many years before the first symptoms appear. With Diagnos, IRIS is putting technology at the forefront for optometrists once again to enhance the quality of care and patient experience!
