The Different Types of Cataracts

Cataracts are a common eye condition that occurs when the crystalline lens, the natural lens of the eye, loses its transparency until it becomes opaque. The result is blurred vision and reduced visual clarity. There are several types of cataracts, each with its distinct characteristics. Don't overlook the importance of proactive eye care – schedule your eye examination today to safeguard your eyes against conditions like cataracts and ensure a clear and vibrant vision for the future.

Here's an overview of the different types of cataracts:

Nuclear cataracts

Nuclear cataracts are the most common form of cataract. It develops in the nucleus (the central part) of the lens. Over time, the nucleus becomes opaque, affecting visual clarity. Symptoms include blurred vision, faded colours and sensitivity to light.

Cortical cataract

In cortical cataracts, opacities form around the periphery of the lens, progressing towards the center. People with this form of cataract may have difficulty seeing in low-light conditions and may perceive light flashes or halos around lights.

Posterior subcapsular cataract

Posterior subcapsular cataracts develop at the back of the lens, just below the capsule, the thin envelope surrounding the lens. This form of cataract can affect near vision, cause sensitivity to light and create halos around light sources.

Congenital cataracts

Congenital cataracts are present from birth. It may result from a genetic abnormality or environmental factors during pregnancy. Babies with congenital cataracts may show a lack of reactivity to visual stimuli or an eye that appears milky.

Traumatic cataract

A traumatic cataract develops as a result of injury to the eye. Trauma such as direct blows, chemical burns or radiation can damage the lens and lead to cataract formation.

Cataract treatment

Cataract treatment generally involves a surgical procedure in which the eye's natural lens, the crystalline lens, is replaced by an artificial lens, i.e. an intraocular implant. This procedure is quick and offers significant results in terms of vision recovery.

It is essential to consult an eye care professional to determine the type of cataract and the most appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis and proper intervention can significantly improve the quality of life of people with cataracts. Cataracts can take many forms, but thanks to advances in surgery, treatment is generally effective, offering individuals better vision and improved quality of life.
