Even Indoors, Your Eyes Need Protection

Your eyes are precious. They're your window on the world. That's why we want to keep them healthy for the rest of your life. Here are a few tips for taking care of your eyes every day, even indoors.

Adopt a healthy diet

Our mothers used to say: "Eat carrots for good eyesight." And they were right. Vitamins A, E and C and minerals such as zinc and lutein help prevent certain vision disorders, including macular degeneration. What's more, vitamin A (found in carrots, spinach and kale) promotes healthy retinal function.

Stop smoking

Smoking has also been singled out as a risk factor for cataracts and macular degeneration. This habit can affect the optic nerve. Smokers, you know what to do!

Get moving

A sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, and high blood pressure are recognized risk factors for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Exercise regularly, and you'll feel better for it.

Use good lighting

When reading or working, make sure you have the proper lighting. The light should illuminate the surface you're looking at. It should be above your left side if you're right-handed and on the right if you're left-handed.

Blink more often

In front of the computer, people tend to keep their eyes open. This is harmful. Learn to blink more often, even if it means taking "blink" breaks or keeping lubricating drops handy.

Rest your eyes

If you work at a computer for several hours, rest your eyes every 20 minutes, looking into the distance for about 20 seconds.

Protect your eyes

Wear protective eyewear at home, in the workshop or during sporting activities. You'll avoid serious injury from shocks, debris that can cause lesions or burns from household cleaning products.

Make an appointment with your optometrist.

Visit your trusted optometrist. Optometrists recommend a complete eye examination or one every two years. If you have diabetes or have a family history of glaucoma or cataracts, visit your optometrist yearly.

These few tips will help you maintain healthy eyes and vision for as long as possible.
