How does hyperthyroidism affect the eyes?

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. These hormones influence many bodily functions, from metabolism to body temperature, but they can also have a direct impact on eye health. One of the most well-known disorders associated with hyperthyroidism is thyroid eye disease, which can cause a variety of eye symptoms.

1.  Why hyperthyroidism can affect the eyes: In some forms of hyperthyroidism, particularly Graves' disease, the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues around the eyes. This autoimmune reaction causes inflammation and swelling of the eye muscles and orbital fat tissue.

This inflammation changes the appearance and function of the eyes, sometimes causing significant discomfort or even visual complications if left untreated.

 2. Common eye symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism. Symptoms vary from person to person, but the most common include:

  • Dry eyes or a feeling of grit in the eyes.
  • Persistent redness and irritation.
  • Bulging eyes (exophthalmos) due to swelling of the orbital tissues.
  • Double vision (diplopia) due to damage to the eye muscles.
  • Pain or pressure around the eyes.
  • Hypersensitivity to light (photophobia).
  • Difficulty closing the eyelids completely, which increases dryness and discomfort.

 3. Risks to vision: In the most severe cases, thyroid eye disease can lead to compression of the optic nerve, causing decreased vision or permanent vision loss. Fortunately, these serious situations are rare, but they require prompt treatment.

4. Taking care of your eyes if you have hyperthyroidism: If you have hyperthyroidism, regular follow-up with your doctor and eye care professional is essential. Here are some tips to protect your eyes:

  • See an optometrist promptly when eye symptoms appear.
  • Use artificial tears to relieve dryness.
  • Wear sunglasses to reduce sensitivity to light and protect your eyes from the wind.
  • Elevate your head slightly when sleeping to reduce swelling around the eyes.
  • Stop smoking, as smoking aggravates thyroid eye disease.

 5. Treatment: Treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms:

  • Control of the thyroid with medication, radioactive iodine, or surgery.
  • Eye treatment: lubricating eye drops, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, or even surgery to correct exophthalmos or double vision.
  • Targeted therapies in certain severe cases (immunosuppressants or monoclonal antibodies).

Hyperthyroidism does not only affect metabolism: it can have a significant impact on eye health. Recognizing the early signs, seeking medical advice quickly, and adopting good protective habits are the best ways to preserve your vision.
