How does lack of sleep affect your eyes?

We all know that lack of sleep has negative effects on mood, concentration, and overall health. But did you know that it also has a direct impact on your eyes and vision? A good night's rest is essential for keeping your eyes healthy.

Dryness and eye irritation

During sleep, your eyes rest and rehydrate. When you don't get enough sleep, tear production decreases, leading to dry eyes. As a result, your eyes may feel itchy, burn, or become red when you wake up and throughout the day.

Blurred vision and difficulty focusing

Lack of sleep can disrupt the coordination between your eyes and your brain. This can cause blurred vision or make it more difficult to focus, especially when reading or working at a computer.

Increased sensitivity to light

When your eyes are tired, they become more sensitive to light (photophobia). Exposure to screens or even daylight can then seem uncomfortable or even painful.

Dark circles and bags under the eyes

This is one of the most visible signs of lack of sleep. Poor blood circulation around the eyes promotes the appearance of bluish circles and puffy bags, giving a tired and aged appearance.

Increased risk of eye diseases

In the long term, lack of sleep could increase the risk of developing certain conditions such as glaucoma, a disease that damages the optic nerve and can lead to irreversible vision loss. Studies show that chronic sleep disorders can play a role in overall eye health.

How can you protect your eyes?

  • Sleep between 7 and 9 hours per night.
  • Avoid screens for at least an hour before going to bed.
  • Create a regular sleep routine.
  • If your eyes remain red, dry, or painful despite getting plenty of rest, consult your optometrist.

Sleep is not only a time for your body to rest, it is also essential for the health of your eyes. Take care of your sleep: your eyes will thank you for it!
