The Importance of Hydration for your Eyes

The heat of the last weeks has reminded us how important it is to stay hydrated in order to avoid feeling discomfort. We think that we only need to drink a lot of water while we are exercising or doing a physical activity but we are wrong: our bodies are made of water by 60%. Since our brain contains 90% of water, it is essential to stay hydrated at all times!

Tips for staying well hydrated
It's all about finding the right balance between the liquids that are ingested and those that are expelled from our body. Simple tips can help you stay well hydrated based on what you do:

-Make sure to drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water a day, which is the recommended amount.
-Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up, and one for each meal you have.
-Eat more fruits and vegetables and think about eating soups more often, cold or hot.
-Drink a glass of water before, during and after your workout.
-Always keep a bottle of water handy to keep reminding you to drink more frequently.
-On hot days or if you are staying outdoors for a couple of hours, drink more water than you usually would.

Hydration and benefits for our eyes
It is important to keep a consistant level of hydration in our body. If we do not drink enough water, our eyes can begin to suffer from dehydration when its tears become insufficient to keep the eyes hydrated. That is why, by keeping a sufficient level of liquid in the body, our brain can send the right amount of water everywhere and the tear ducts among others, will be able to continue to function and will keep on cleaning the eyes and protecting them from infections.

Also, dehydration can cause dry eye that can lead to blurred vision and headaches. To solve this problem, just drink plenty of water and take several short breaks to let your eyes rest a little.

In general, it is recommended to drink 2.7 liters of water a day for women and 3.7 liters for men. Also keep in mind that fruits and vegetables already contain a lot of liquid.
