Eye Hydration: Tips and Benefits

The body needs to be well hydrated to maintain the ocular moisture necessary for good vision. Hydrating the eyes is essential to maintain your eyesight and tear production. Eye strain, blurred vision and headaches are good indicators that your eyes are dry and that it is time to drink more water daily.

Tips to Keep Your Eyes Hydrated

We mistakenly think that we should only drink a lot of water when we practice a sport. Nevertheless, it is essential to stay hydrated at all times, which is not surprising when we know that our body is composed of 60% to 70% of water. This variation is due to the morphological differences that exist between individuals.

Staying well-hydrated is about balancing the liquids ingested and those expelled from our bodies. Here are our easy-to-apply tips. They will help you stay well hydrated depending on the activities you do:

  • Make sure to drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water a day, the recommended amount.
  • Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up and one for each meal you have.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • Consider eating soups more often, whether cold or hot.
  • Drink a glass of water before, during and after physical activity.
  • Always keep a bottle of water handy to keep reminding you to drink more frequently.
  • On hot days drink more water than you usually would.

Eye Hydration and Its Benefits

It is essential to keep a constant hydration level in our body so that our eyes stay moist. When we are less hydrated, the number of tears becomes insufficient. And in this case, the eyes become dry.

By keeping enough fluid in the body, our brain can send the right amount of water everywhere. Thus, tears can play their role more effectively. And more particularly: lubricating and cleaning the eyes while protecting them from infections.

Also, dehydration can cause dry eyes, leading to blurred vision and headaches. To solve this problem, just drink plenty of water and take several short breaks to let your eyes rest a little. The use of artificial tears may also be appropriate. Your optometrist can advise you on the type of drops to get.

How Do You Drink Enough Water in a Day?

In general, it is recommended to drink 2.2 litres of water a day for women and 3 litres for men. Also, keep in mind that fruits and vegetables already contain a lot of liquid. That said, food provides on average 20% of water needs.

For those who are not fans of large glasses of water, it is possible to flavour it naturally. For a healthy, unsweetened option, we suggest putting slices of limes and lemon into your water. This will give it a slightly sour taste. You can also add strawberries, cucumbers or even mint.
