How To Protect Our Eyes From The Effects Of Blue Light

Blue light is everywhere. Although it is mainly emitted by the sun, it also comes from DEL lighting and halogen lamps, but especially from computer screens and smartphones.

In the case of prolonged blue light exposure from digital screens, you might experience eye fatigue or headaches. The cause? The flickering from new technologies is integrated into our digital devices to improve clarity. As a result, the retina can become damaged, increasing the risk of long-term vision problems.

Blue light is part of the natural light spectrum. Turquoise blue, which is part of this blue light emitted by the sun, is beneficial to our health. Our bodies use it to regulate sleep and wake cycles, body temperature, and hormonal balance. It is also a remedy for a bad mood and an ally to our well-being. In other words, blue light is a natural tonic!

The problem is that blue light is only partially filtered by the crystalline lens and hits the retina at its heart, the macula. Screens and artificial light sources diffuse a large part of it.

In the long term, this blue light, to which we are increasingly exposed, accelerates the ageing of retinal cells and can increase the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Here are some ways to protect yourself.

Good Screen Habits

Remember to adopt good habits to avoid overexposing your eyes to blue light. Are you familiar with the 20/20/20 rule? It consists of taking visual breaks every 20 minutes, looking away from the screen and at a distance of 20 feet for 20 seconds.

Glasses for Better Protection

Glasses that filter out harmful blue light are still the most straightforward protection to adopt. These special coatings can be applied to lenses to make the glasses blue-light proof. These treatments offer protection against the harmful light emitted by digital screens, reducing eye strain. In addition, this solution increases contrast by improving clarity and colour perception. Finally, this treatment can reduce glare for a more comfortable and relaxed vision.
