The role of the Dispensing Optician ranges from fitting, replacing and selling ophthalmic lenses (eyeglasses and contact lenses) as prescribed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Their training in science, fitting visual orthotics and problem-solving in the field allows them to propose solutions that meet specific needs in eyewear and contact lenses.
The training program leading to the optician profession is a 3-year full-time program. It includes a variety of mandatory courses leading to a Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS) in visual orthotics techniques.
To become an expert in eyewear and contact lenses, the student is trained in the sciences: anatomy and physiology of the eye, chemical phenomena in the ophthalmic field, principles of optics, physiology and ocular pathologies, lens characteristics, evaluation of ametropia and visual functions, and also take courses in optical business management techniques, customer communication, lens and optical product sales, as well as learning frame fabrication and repair, and fitting lens techniques.
The essential qualities to be a good optician
Meticulousness, precision, patience, dexterity and motor skills are essential qualities sought after in opticians and dispensing opticians. In addition, since they are in contact with the public and work in the retail field, they must have excellent communication and relational skills (persuasion, patience, tact, diplomacy, interpersonal skills, etc.) and master the various facets of customer service and sales.
