Types of Surgeries Offered
Several types of surgery are offered at the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic. Surgery is chosen based on the patient's vision disorder, but also on their prescription. Myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia can be corrected by eye surgery, in most cases. Cataract surgeries are also offered.
The most common surgery is ULTRALASIK, a type of laser surgery. The latest generation of lasers, SCHWIND AMARIS 750S, is used during those surgeries. ULTRALASIK corrects imperfections in the eyes by spraying small layers of cells on the surface of the cornea. Laser surgery can correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The treatment time is very short, and the speed of recovery is almost immediate for most patients.
Another type of surgery performed at the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic is PHAKE lens surgery. It is reserved for patients with a high prescription and for whom laser surgery is not recommended. The operation consists in permanently implanting a lens between the iris and the eye’s lens.
A Solution Even for Presbyopia
To correct presbyopia, intraocular lenses can be placed inside the eye. They are available in monofocal and multifocal versions. The monofocal lens corrects vision at a single distance, either near or far. To correct presbyopia, one eye is corrected for vision at a distance and the other for near vision, to allow seeing at all distances. However, this surgery requires some time to adapt. Wearing glasses following surgery may be necessary in certain situations, for example when driving at night or while reading small print. As for multifocal lenses, they separate the light into several focal points, making it possible to see at all distances with the same eye. After having this type of surgery, the patient can see well from both near and far without glasses.
Cataract Surgery
The last type of operation offered by the IRIS Ophthalmology Clinic is cataract laser surgery. It treats cataracts, which cause a loss of transparency of the lens, resulting in cloudy vision. In order to avoid the patient from having to go to the Clinic twice, both eyes are operated on, on the same day if the ophthalmologist considers it safe. The Catalyst TM laser is used during the procedure and it offers great precision.
