Do Transitions® photochromic lenses block blue light?

Yes, but blue light protection is not the main reason for using Transitions® lenses.

Most people buy Transitions® lenses to ease the change between artificial light (indoors) and natural light (outdoors). Since photochromic lenses have the ability to darken in sunlight while offering UV protection, they eliminate the need for prescription sunglasses.

Moreover, photochromic lenses have a third advantage: they block blue light both from the sun and from your digital screens.

Although Transitions® photochromic lenses have been designed for a different purpose, they have blue-light-blocking capabilities.

Although UV rays and blue light are different, blue light can still harm your eyes, especially with prolonged exposure to digital screens and direct sunlight. All invisible and partially visible light can have adverse side effects on the health of your eyes.

Side effects of blue light

Blue light, emitted by the digital screens you use every day, not only causes eyestrain that can lead to headaches and blurred vision but also disrupts your sleep cycle.

Blue light can have positive effects in small quantities, such as helping you sleep better, but most people don't moderate the time they spend on screens.

When you wear Transitions® lenses, you get the benefits of convenience and UV protection, but you also protect your eyes from the harmful overexposure of blue light.

Consult your IRIS optometrist and choose Transitions® lenses for your next glasses.
